As part of the Ripstick range developed with Glen Plake, The Ripstick 106 are the freeride and powder hunting relation of the Ripstick 96. With the same construction, the 106 are still a super versatile ski giving plenty of float whilst still dealing with the piste surprisingly well.  The 106mm waist definitely means that these skis want to be off piste and they are super fun on the descent, the weight is also still impressively low and combined with the right binding they make a great soft snow focussed, day touring ski.

The Ripstick features Elan's Amphibio Technology, this is a clever use of different camber and rocker profiles on the inside and outside edge. The inside edge gets a longer camber profile for increased grip and precision whilst the outside edge gets more rocker to give forgiveness and easier turn initiation. This of course means that there is a left and a right ski so don't get them mixed up, you can really tell the difference when you do!

The Ripstick 106 is more off piste and soft snow focused than the 96 but it could still sit comfortably amongst the wide all mountain skis, they are a surprisingly good piste ski giving smooth and solid but lively all mountain ski performance, not as grippy as the green 96 but they ski well for the width.

Off piste, the 106mm underfoot width combined with the rocker comes fully into play giving more float and stability than the 96 version whilst still being very forgiving and fun, the turn initiation is easy, and they avoid hooking up, in powder and crud.

At a 3.5kg per pair total weight, the Elan Ripstick 106 are light for such a solid and wide freeride / all mountain ski, if using a good lightweight pin tech touring binding they are certainly light enough for use as a powder stash hunting ski touring ski and the tail has a profile designed to work with ski skins. Being that bit wider they lend themselves a little more towards softer snow and shorter tours than the 96 and 88 but they can still deal with whatever you get on the way back down.

The Ripstick 106 will skiers who want a wider ski to do almost everything on, from a week of resort skiing to powder hunting day tours. They will also suit people who want to enjoy the descent with a fun, solid, dependable and frankly easy ski in whatever conditions the mountain throws at you. Elan use a system of hollow 5mm diameter carbon tubes within the wood laminates to take weight out but also to add stiffness.

With a reputation for making high quality skis, for themselves and many other brands, Elan have managed to produce a superb and lightweight but also strong and solid ski at a very sensible price.
