ATK are an Italian Ski Touring Binding brand with some fantastic revolutionary lightweight binding designs and the new Freeraider or FR16 is their most powerful Freetouring binding system to date.
Based on the well established Freeraider 14, the Freeraider 16 is aimed at the hardest skiers out there and features a more powerful spring set for increased boot retention with release setting from 9 to 16 and comes with the new Toe piece shim which raises the toe height to reduce the drop (height difference between the heel pins and the toe pins) to 4mm making for a flatter and more neutral ski feel.
The increased power in the springs means that the boot play within the bindings whilst skiing is kept to a minimum so the skier gets maximum control. This means that the minimum setting is 9 so it's important to make sure that the user is happy to ski at this level.
The Freeraider 16 also comes with the ATK Freeride spacer which fixes to the heel piece around the brakes to provide a platform to support the boot sole while skiing giving increased ski performance.
The ATK Freeraider 16 has all of the other features you would expect from a fully fledged free touring binding, easy step in, ski brakes, fully adjustable vertical and horizontal release value range 9 -16, super solid ski performance, 3 stage climbing positions and ski crampon slots. All of these features at an impressive 0.74Kg per pair!
Constructed predominantly from Alloy the ATK Freeraider 16 feel solid and robust and will give years of reliable performance.
One of the unique features of the ATK designs is there Cam release system, this clever design utilises a Cam profile pressed against the heel pins by a pre tensioned spring, when a boot steps into the binding or a fall requiring vertical release occurs, the Cam profile provides a precise resistance to the pins. This system allows an accurate, adjustable control of the release tension whilst maintaining an easy step in, solid power transfer whilst skiing and keeps the weight of the binding down.
All of this state of the art design is combined in a binding which as well as being super light, also looks great.
The ATK Freeraider 16 are an excellent choice for powerful ski tourers and free tourers wanting the maximum ski performance with the minimum drop (or delta angle), superb boot retention, robust and reliable construction and a full set of features from their free touring bindings without sacrificing weight.
